The Laramie Project opens this week at The Auburn Public Theater in Downtown, Auburn.

Nine actors play over 60 roles in this unique play about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming.   The murder was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in various states, including Wyoming

This week, we will introduce you to the actors of this production and get some insight into The Laramie Project.  This interview was with Vera Carabajal

Vera is thrilled to be back on the boards again after five years on the DL.  She is beyond thrilled to be making this return in a show with her niece and directed by her sister, as well as every member of this brilliant talented cast (even Fran.) She has been performing since the age of 4 when she literally pulled her mom’s hair out to be on Romper Room.  She has been in numerous productions throughout central New York. Her favorite shows are always the shows she gets to do with family.  Some favorite roles include Sarah the lizard in “Seascape”,  and one half of the wicked step sisters in “Cinderella.”

What characters do you play in the show? Narrator, Marge, Baptist Minister, Lucy Thompson, Catherine Connelly and Dr. Cantway

What made you want to do this play?

As a lifelong ally of the LGBT community I am saddened that this show remains so relevant 20 years later. But if we continue to “tell it right” we may someday make this a period piece and not an ongoing tale of the struggle for human rights. H-O-P-E.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT plays tonight and tomorrow (Friday, Oct 11 and Saturday, Oct 12) at 7:30pm at the Auburn Public Theater.  Tickets are $10 (senior/student) & $15 (general admission).

Tickets available at the door or call 315-253-6669

Thanks, Vera! We look forward to catching you and your fellow cast members this weekend. Stay tuned for more cast interviews!
