The Laramie Project opens this week at The Auburn Public Theater in Downtown, Auburn.

Nine actors play over 60 roles in this unique play about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming.   The murder was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in various states, including Wyoming.

This week, we will introduce to the actors of this production and get some insight into The Laramie Project.  This interview was with Holly Maltese.

Holly Maltese of Weedsport is happy to be performing again with the Auburn Players Community Theater. This production of The Laramie Project has been both challenging and rewarding. Holly has most recently performed as part of two award winning ensembles in Lil’ Abner and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. She is the former director of the Weedsport Middle School musicals and past notable roles include Ado Annie-Oklahoma, Meg Boyd-Damn Yankees, Miss Hannigan-Annie and Doris -Same Time Next Year. She is very much looking forward to playing the part of Mrs. Cratchit in Scrooge the Musical in December.  She wants to give a huge thank you to Lisa and this incredible cast for helping to tell this important story. “Go home, give your kids a hug and don’t let a day go by without telling them that you love them.” Pass it on.

What characters do you play in the show? Rebecca Hilliker, Reggie Fluty, Shadow, Allison Mears, Sherry Aanenson, Reporter, Bailiff, Ensemble

What made you want to do this play?  I knew that I wanted to be a part of this production and missed it the last time around.  Laramie is Everytown.  It could be Auburn or Weedsport. If we can reach one person to look deeply inside themselves and change for the better or convince one hurting soul that they matter, then we are successful. The Laramie Project challenges us to dig deeply and find out who we are in a changing world. Let’s be on the right side of history.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT plays Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (October 10, 11, & 12) at 7:30pm at The Auburn Public Theater.  Tickets are $10 (senior/student) & $15 (general admission), and may be purchased by visiting www.auburnpublictheater.org or by calling the box office at 315-253-6669.

Thanks, Holly! We look forward to catching you and your fellow cast members this weekend. Stay tuned for more cast interviews!
