The Laramie Project opens this week at The Auburn Public Theater in Downtown, Auburn.

Nine actors play over 60 roles in this unique play about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming.   The murder was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in various states, including Wyoming

This week, we will introduce you to the actors of this production and get some insight into The Laramie Project.  Now, meet Nick Bessette…

Nick Bessette is thrilled to be returning to the Auburn Players. He last performed for the Players in Hair (Berger). Most recently, he has been seen in Next to Normal (Dan), Evita (Che), and the musical version of the film Little Miss Sunshine (Uncle Frank). When not on stage, he teaches at Union Springs HS. Nick also wishes to thank Ben and his family.

What characters do you play in the show?

Greg Pierotti, Sgt. Hing, Phil LaBrie, Father Roger, Rulon Stacey, Jonas Slonaker, Phillip Dubois

What made you want to do this play?

This true story is as important as ever.  Our Supreme Court is currently deciding if it is legal to fire employees for being gay and hate crimes continue to rise. I am proud to be a part of the hundreds of theater communities across the country which continue to keep this message alive.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT plays Friday, and Saturday (October 11 & 12) at 7:30pm at the Auburn Public Theater.  Tickets are $10 (senior/student) & $15 (general admission) and may be purchased by calling the box office at 315-253-6669 or at the door

Thanks, Nick! We look forward to catching you and your fellow cast members this weekend. Stay tuned for more cast interviews!

It sounds wonderful and certainly, sadly, timely.
