This weekend The Auburn Players Community Theatre starts another season of live theatre with the production of  “Antigone & Letters to Soldiers Lost.”

Based on Sophocles’ play Antigone, this adaptation by Al Schnupp inter-splices the classic Greek tragedy with letters written to lost soldiers and left at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC.  The letters are read by the cast as members at specific moments throughout the play. Together, the play and letters show how survivors deal with the aftermath of war.

Director Robert Frame had to re-imagine what it meant to create performance art during a pandemic.  “Directing with Social Distancing sometimes goes against all my instincts as a director,” Frame explained, “which is to create intimate scenes and allow the actors to connect- the anthesis of Social Distance.” Rehearsals started in Zoom meetings, which worked out well for this show due to small scenes and presenting the letters that were left at the wall. Frame continued, “We were able to focus on the words: what they meant and how to say them as well as character work.”  Social distant blocking and the use of masks added another layer of complexity.  Frame worked with movement and placement, keeping distance, while allowing a few moments of close contact.
